Obscure CSS
Rated out of 5 stars, September 12st, 2009
Have bought hundreds of books from Amazon but this was only the second, I think, that I've returned to them for a refund. So obviously I didn't read it all - just the first couple of chapters and then I quickly skimmed it to see if there was anything useful.
If you call your book "Advanced" I think you should outline the technical experience you expect of your target audience - they didn't do that... For me this epitomised what I felt was a general lack of interest in the reader and our plight - struggling to use let alone master CSS. I felt they'd written it to impress their peers rather than educate the masses. For me CSS is difficult not because we're stupid but because of (a) the bizarre specification and (b) the way the different browsers (mainly IE) interpret it.
Many CSS books are written from this standpoint (e.g. "CSS - The Missing Manual" by McFarland and "Pro CSS and HTML Design Patterns" by Bowers) and are open about the shortcomings of both CSS and the browsers and leave you feeling that someone with a wealth of practical experience has done their best to help you get to grips with the realities of the situation. I didn't get that feeling from this book and I guess that's why I sent it back.
