The 1,200-page Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 starts predictably with an explanation of ASP--Active Server Pages--and why they are a Good Thing. It covers installing and testing IIS 5.0, and then you are ready to write your first ASP example--all in chapter one. Next you learn about client and server side scripting followed by chapter on variables; control structures; objects, properties and events; cookies, the all-important error handling and so on all the way up to creating a working ASP-based database application. COM+, ADO and XML are covered en route, and the result is a considered and well- constructed course in ASP for professionals.
One of the strengths of Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 is the feeling it gives that the authors have been there before you. (Six authors are credited, complete with the usual pictures that grace the covers of Wrox titles-- why aren't programmers more photogenic?) Their experience shows through most clearly in the gotchas and practical debugging advice peppered through the book.
If you're already creating HTML pages and want to extend your skills into the more lucrative corporate Web sector--a major stronghold of ASP--then you'll want to work your way through this book. -- Steve Patient

Worth its weight!

A very clearly-written book aimed at people with absolutely no experience of ASP (but you'll need to know HTML of course). I have only read the first 64 pages but having read them I now understand many things I never really understood before, such as what a server is exactly (and how it works), how to work with the server IIS 5.0, how browsers and servers communicate, what TCP/IP is, what HTTP is, and how scripting languages work. This information alone has already made the book a worthwhile purchase for me so I recommend it strongly. -
excellent starting point for beginners wishing to learn ASP

This book is a godsend ;) I purchased it to supplement the HTML i am learning in HND Computing, and it's given me such confidence that i am doing my final year project in ASP.the book is very well written throughout, it's not even "Americanised" (or should that be "Americanized"?). all the code examples worked without modification, i now have a thorough understanding of the basics of ASP and ADO... what more could you want..? buy it now.

Excellent guide from zero previous knowledge
Rated out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2001
I read this book over two days on various flights and then again working through it at home. It is a very readable thorough guide and assumes no previous knowledge. I recommend this book as a starting point to anyone wishing to learn ASP.Contrary to criticisms that this book is too long and longwinded, it is a beginners guide and as such spends enough time on explaining the subject matter thoroughly. More experienced persons may of course skip sections or more straight on to the Professional book.
Yes some of the examples are not appropriate for real-world usage, but this is a teaching guide so that should be expected.
Very well written especially for its target audience and a good general guide to keep as a reference.

Another cracker from Wrox

This is the book I started with. It took me very quickly from first principals and simple examples to complex and corporate level ASP utilisation. It is so well written and easy to follow I could have read this in bed - now that's sad! To the author - thanks for all the headaches and work.
