Review Beginning Java programming for Dummies
Rated out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2009
A 3 star book.
This book as per the introduction is for Beginners with no programming experience, but the author starts of with some complicated examples like reading keyboard input.
Most of the text has been designed, so that readers with no programming experience are able to learn this, however the examples are a bit complicated. Some of the example program run into errors after execution.
The author has not detailed anything about debugging, maybe because only the JCreator's Pro edition has got this feature. There is also no mention about exception handling.
There are a few examples missing in the zip file downloaded from the web. Also the author has zipped all the JCreators project and workfiles, whereas I was using eclipse and I had to delete these files.
Credit should go to the author for explaining ENUM types and enchanced FOR loops in a simple language. The author has missed the topic of exiting from the loop midway.
This book is ok, but definitely NOT for beginners with No programming experience as stated. -
Great book for beginners

This is a really great introductory book to the world of Java. I had started a course that included some Java and was not finding the teaching to be adequate. So I bought this book and found that the concepts that I needed to understand were far easier to grasp after reading through some of the examples in the book. He uses really simplified material - how many gumballs for how many kids and so on - to explain what is going on, and when he is discussing a program in stages, he highlights in bold the particular points of the program that he is discussing at that moment. Additionally, I emailed the author about follow up books and got a reply in less than twenty four hours. Highly recommended and I'm looking forward to his next books. -
Good but could have been great

Excellent reference with clear instructions and examples. Unfortunately this is an older addition so the reference's to the "Dummies" website for downloading program examples are no longer there, which can slow you down as you have to find other solutions. -
Good Book

Refers to information that does not exist
Rated out of 5 stars, September 12th, 2008
On the second chapter in this book it refers to information you must download to be able to use the remainder of the book. It has links to the information that do not work and searching for the information produces no clear result. The book is a failure and has wasted a lot of my precious time.
