Reviews for Beginning Red Hat Linux 9 (Programmer to Programmer)

  1. For the beginner?? May be not

    Rated 3 out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2004

It took 7, Yes Seven!! authors to put this book together. On the one hand it is a good book to get you started, I did not have any trouble Installing from the disks, however, for a beginner, perhaps it is not the right book, there are too many mistakes, and assumptions made. The one quality this book lacks, is that each author did not read each others sections of the book, otherwise there would have been less mistakes.

On the whole, if you want to learn about Red Hat Linux, look elsewhere of this book.

  2. Find another book

    Rated 2 out of 5 stars, February 12th, 2004

The book is missing a lot of information on the subjects that it does teach. For example he will teach you how to install linux on a new computer, but not how to combine it with Windows, although most people will want it to be with Windows. Another example, he will show you how to get into a directory but forget to show you to move back up... and so on.
I'm sure the writer has a deep knowledge of linux but his teaching skills are rubbish.
  3. Too much missing

    Rated 1 out of 5 stars, January 12th, 2004

This book cannot be recommended unless you want to (and are able) to go with the authors choice of GUI. There is virtually nothing about the command line interface, and what there is does not relate to the default shell that linux starts with. The supplied disks would not install a working system on my machine, and there is absolutely no troubleshooting information. All in all, a big disappointment.
  4. OK

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, November 12th, 2003

Ok book but I don't like the fact it tells you how to crack passwords as it gives the Linux genre a bad name as it perceives all of us to be hackers.

Rest of the book is ok but definately aimed at the newer user.
