FreeHand is a straightforward vector-based graphics application, but some of the tools in the application can be tricky to use. This compact guide makes it easy to learn the intricacies of pen tools and Bézier curves. Beginners can follow the step-by-step instructions while they work on their own projects. The concise text and thorough index also make this convenient as a reference book. And, unlike gargantuan, bible-type guides, you can easily hold it in your lap or place it in front of the keyboard while you work.

The book begins with formatting a new document, working with views and units of measurement, and working with layers. Next up are excellent chapters on creating shapes; you learn how to work with points, paths, freehand tools, the pen, and the Bézigon (a more automated pen tool). Moving and transforming, working with text, colour, styles, path operations, and the Xtra tools (like the fisheye lens) are addressed next. The brief chapter on creating mathematically correct charts nimbly covers all the relevant options.

The book shows how to import and extract images and how to save them in different formats. Also covered is how to prepare images for printing, for the Web, or for importing into Flash. Appendices discuss toolbars, menus and dialogue boxes, keyboard shortcuts, fills, and strokes.

Although written for FreeHand 9, owners of version 8 will still find the instructions clear and useful. Any differences between Windows and Macintosh platforms are minimal and clearly described. This book is fast and thorough, and it'll get you up and running quickly. --Angelynn Grant, Amazon.com

I like these books, I've bought 4 different titles now. They work well for me because they interlace text and pictures very well, allowing me to cross refernce between the screen and book quickly. These books work best for beginner to intermediate, but they give you a platform with which to move on to a much more technical level - if you want to .
