Setting the Standard
Rated out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2010
I have read a lot of HTML/CSS books throughout my career and this by far is the best. From a complete beginner wishing to build their first website to a professional wishing to brush up their skills and truly understand a web standards approach, this is the book for you. The greatest thing about this book is the ease at which it explains things, sometimes in a rather humorous fashion. For years I have used methods in this book but never truly understood the reasoning to do things in a certain way and this book filled in those gaps for me. Regardless of your level of expertise this is a fantastic book and a great read. -
Excellent book for any aspiring web developer
Rated out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2009
This is an excellent start for anyone interested in becoming a web developer, or even people who have been hacking together websites for a while but want to built standards compliant websites from the ground up. It covers all basics and fundamentals, then layers techniques on top of this solid foundation to give you the tools to create a fully functioning website. Unlike many other beginner texts, this book also covers how to set up your domain name and hosting, invaluable to the beginner but often overlooked.
Highly recommended. -
The Standardistas Lead the Revolution!
Rated out of 5 stars, October 12th, 2009
Messers Murphy and Persson, AKA The Standardistas, have whittled and honed the text of this finely crafted instructional guide to enable beginners and intermediate designers alike to create web pages that use well-structured XHTML to semantically markup their content and then to present that content using lean and efficient CSS style sheets.
I built my first websites back in the mid-nineties, in the dark old days when nothing was standard, very few sites worked as intended and designers told users that their site was best viewed in a particular browser at a specific screen size. Thankfully books such as HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions will consign these practices to the dustbin of history. By adopting the Web Standardistas' Approach advocated by Messers Murphy and Persson the design community is forging a web where accessibility and usability will be standard issue.
I have read over 20 web design books and in my opinion this is the finest. It is written with an engaging wry humor, and should also complete your education in the finer arts of tea drinking and deepen your knowledge of the history and achievements of the other primates with whom we share this marvelous blue planet that is home to our interwebs.
The title of my review mentions revolution - we've had many revolutions in the history of the world, recent examples being the Agricultural Revolution and the Industrial Revolutions, which took place in the last millennium. There are several possible titles for the current revolution, the Technological, or the Information, or the Communication Revolution, whatever its called, the Standardistas are at the forefront of it, consolidating it and ensuring that the troops are using the most up-to-date technologies, and that they know how to use them.
Sometimes books can quickly loose their relevance, I think that in conjunction with the companion website: webstandardistas that this book will be a standard text in Universities, Colleges and design studios for many years to come. -
A must for any aspiring web designer
Rated out of 5 stars, October 12th, 2009
This book is an excellent introduction to standards based web design. Written in a very accessible manner Murphy and Persson walk you through creating well structured XHTML pages then show you how to style them using CSS. With a dedicated website to help you along you can't go wrong.
As a designer I have always left the programing of my client sites up to someone who knows how, thinking it was way beyond me. This book has shown me just how easy it actually is to programme them yourself and what's more I don't have to buy any expensive software get me started!
I reckon this will quickly become a university standard introduction to web design and the first port-of-call for any aspiring designer. Well done guys! -
HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions: A Web Standardistas' Approach
Rated out of 5 stars, October 12st, 2009
I bought this for my son who was advised by his university to purchase this particular book.
It certainly is very useful for first time students. The course "Interactive 3D Multimedia" touches on a huge range of areas in web design, graphics design, and programming. This book is helping him understand the fundementals for the subject. Delivery of the product was excellent and the value was superb, big saving on original pricing and that despite the fact it was delivered from the US.
Would recommend both Amazon and Best Bargains Books for supplying an excellent service. Cannot fault them for anything.
