Of all areas of interest in computer hardware and software technologies in recent years, few can have had as much attention as those that embrace the Internet. While people have become increasingly familiar with "surfing the net", now many have also discovered that it is not too difficult a task to design and build their own Web pages.

HTML Complete, published by Sybex, is a unique 1,000 page digest from 10 books by various authors about using Hypertext Markup Language, the bricks and mortar of Web page construction. Not that this book will turn you into a Master Builder overnight, but it will give you a thorough apprenticeship into the fundamentals of Web page design in an easy to read manner with lots of practical examples. The main sections of the book provide a steady-paced tutorial from the basics of HTML and site navigation through to the more advanced extensions where you can learn the first principles of Perl, DHTML, JavaScript and XML. In addition, an extensive 300 page appendix covers the syntax of using HTML tags and attributes, cascading style sheets, JavaScript, and HTML colours and character codes.

However, HTML Complete isn't just about cutting the code behind the pages, it also provides some valuable insights into good visual design, teaching you what works and what doesn't. Aimed at users of all levels, the broad brush approach of HTML Complete may leave the more experienced user wanting more. The advantage of this taster compilation is that it pulls back the curtains to give a peek into what is possible and lays some solid foundations upon which to build further. --Peter Lunn

Reviews for HTML Complete

  1. if you buy one html reference by this

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, January 12th, 2002

This is not a teach yourself book - it is a reference book and in that respect is excellent. As a webmaster developing online services and as a computer science student this html reference is incredible and real value for money.
  2. easy enough for beginners ,tough enough for experts

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2001

This is a book I would recommind to almost anyone learning HTM. The beauty of this book is that, what ever level you are at, you won;t be spoken down to. The instructional material is specific enough to give you an "end product". and open enough to get you thinking.
My only gripe with this book it that, being the shape it is , it's slightly onweildy. The appendices at the end of the book (500 pages) will prove VERY usefull if you get heavy on web design.

one last thing. don't assume the web addresses are as stated within the text. times change fast on the web. so keep your eyes peeled. Actually, I wouldn't be too quick to call that a negative criticism either, for therein lies a hidden lesson. Maintain your site.

  3. Excellent, thorough introduction to web development

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, July 12rd, 2001

Takes the reader through web design concepts and coding skills through to DHTML and the hot web topics of XML and perl. An excellent first text for all things internet.
  4. best book in my library

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, May 12th, 2001

i found this book online and thought: for this price i can take the risk and just buy it. turns out to be an exellent resource for just about any topic. it is not exhaustive (look at the microsoft online library for that), but it wil tell you someting about most issues you might come a ccross...
  5. If I could only have one HTML text this would be it!

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, September 12st, 2000

Ignore the poor quality paper (it is after all a very cheap book). This is the best book of it's kind I have come across. Covers introductory to medium level HTML and related topics such as CSS. This book combined with the multitude of on-line resources should be all you ever need and if you are new to HTML, reading this will give you enough background to explore the web-based resources intelligently.
