How to learn...

Ideal - not only html/xhtml, but also insights into how the web works, and css, php and mysql coding. Perfect for the novice or intermediate designer. -
Looks like im not even a dummy

Well in my opinion its not the best For Dummies book, its a great book very smart but it just lacks that For Dummies quality, another show off author , its ok thru xhtml and css bit but when it gets to more complicated java script and PHP bits its just no good. If your a begginer programer and i guess you are get "C for dummies" i know its C but trust me its a great book which explains coding in overall For Dummies style, gives you an overall idea about coding and all the bits and bobs that make you start to think like a programer. -
Lots of info but few tutorials..

Packed with tools, firefox addons and various utilities recommended in the lessons (all on disc), this book got me off to a great start. The only problem I found was at the end of the first book (HTML) it stopped giving the 'guided tutorials' and instead just proceeded to show me different things I could do without explaining exactly how.
The few examples it did display the code for, it did try to explain what the code meant but in my opinion, it jumped to quickly from the holding-your-hand-while-you-learn stage to the this-is-what-you-can-do-when-you-know-what-you're-doing stage almost instantly, leaving me feeling a bit lost, like i'm waiting for the next example to follow along to that never appears..
Overall, a fascinating read written in an informal, interesting style which is easy to read and understand, yet contains the essence of what you need to know, whilst providing many tips and software recommendations to work alongside the examples in the book.
If you are a quick study and are handy with a search engine to complement this book, it should set you up nicely... -
I'm not a dummy! But still a great book!

A great bookfor creating your first website!
I was worried to start with as I've not used the 'for dummies' series of books before. I need not have been.
The book is logically set out and easy to follow. If you are looking to create your first website from scratch then this book would be a great one to use.
To start with it takes you though HTML basics. Every section builds on what you have read previously.
An early tennent that the book uses is.
"HTML for content - CSS for Design"
Not only is this good web-writing sense but it helps to seperate the two and allows for easier updating and content management. The final section is on XHTML. This is a bit harder to understand but with a pot of tea (or coffee) and the skills you learnt from the first 2 sections of the book it will all fall into place.
Although it could be used as a reference book for dipping into, I'd suggest this really is a beginners book, or for someone who used to play with websites 'back in the day' (geocities and the like) and wants to find out more about current policies and standards.
I enjoyed this book and found it very helpful. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to create their first website. -
Excellent Book

This is truly an excellent book for beginners or even intermediate users.Well structured and flow not so informative though. It doesn't go deep in HTML but covers what is needed for you to start playing in XHTML and CSS.
I highly recommend this book, easy to read and not boring at all.
