Even if you rely on online documentation for Web-page design, there's nothing like a handy, one-volume guide to the essentials of HTML and dynamic HTML (DHTML) standards. That's the idea behind Instant HTML, a much-needed reference that helps you get the most out of Web-page design and create cutting-edge cross-browser content.

Early chapters describe the basic terms and technologies, including HTML, JavaScript, VBScript, ECMAScript (a new, vender-neutral alternative) and DHTML. The authors then give a step-by-step tour of basic Web-page design, from the basic tags used in creating simple pages to style sheets, images and links to other pages. Further chapters take on tables, frames and forms, and teach you how to use Java applets and ActiveX components within HTML. The authors show the differences between JavaScript and VBScript and, where appropriate, point out new features in emerging HTML 4 specifications. Each topic is illustrated with concise examples, and the authors note what does and does not work in Netscape Navigator 4 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.

The last part of the book will probably be useful to even the most seasoned HTML developer. Chapters explain how to design with DHTML in both Navigator 4 and Internet Explorer 4, displaying useful sample pages for each browser and offering tips on how to create cross-platform content for both browsers. Finally, since this is a reference book, valuable appendices are included for HTML tags, JavaScript and VBScript basics together with other information Internet developers will find useful.

Reviews for Instant HTML Programmer's Reference

  1. Great Reference to HTML!

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2003

When I initially bought this book (some 4 years ago), I wanted an introduction to HTML. I saw this book and bought it.
I quickly found out that it wasn't a beginners book ,but a reference book. But I read through it, and using other supplement material, I quickly got the grips of basic HTML.

The book is essentially a reference book, and a top class one at that! With chapters containing everything, including tables, forms, framesets, images, linking, as well as introductions to javascript, vbscript, css and other html based scripting languages! The chapters are laid out nicely, with different html tags relating to the subject as titles, with the attributes listed underneath giving a description and sometimes examples.

Although maybe a little bit dated now, with the use of XHTML, it is still the book of choice for people using HTML 4 (The majority of html is html 4).

The appendices at the back are simply great! There is a css style appendice, html colour codes, javascript functions and references, character codings and lots of other useful stuff.

I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in html! Maybe not to someone who is brand new to computing, or not familiar with simple internet concepts. I would recommend an alternate for them, but for anyone coming to html from another computing area, or just wanting a great reference book, they should buy this!

Overall I am very pleased with this book, and would never consider changing it for another! Totally great HTML reference!

  2. Excellent

As a part-time professional web designer, I found this book to be more than useful as a learning and reference aid. I recently recommended this book to other students in my class studying HNC Computing. Top Marks!
  3. write your own webpage in an hour...guaranteed.

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, August 12th, 2000

i use html every day of my working life...occasionally i need to refer to a reference when i forget certain attributes of certain tags...or whether these tags etc. are supported by which browsers..after years of work i have found that this is the best html reference book on the market...its never fails me...the only problem is perhaps the index...dont use it but pretty soon you'll know the book well enough to find exactly what you want...
  4. Throw all your other HTML books away

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, July 12th, 2000

This was the second book I purchased on HTML just after it was published. The first book purchased hit the bin! I have never need any other book on HTML. It is not the book for the total beginner but if you serious about web design and development you have to buy this book. As a full time web application developer I should know.
