Reviews for Introduction to Linux (Second Edition)

  1. Excellent

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2009

It's difficult to justify voicing an opinion about a book when you are a beginner because you know little about the subject you are to study.

All you can say is how it reads and how it teaches.

Machtelt's English is a bit "foreign" at times but this takes nothing away, rather adding a sort of charm. It is a no-nonsense sort of book.

She certainly knows her stuff and soon gets you going on the keyboard which is what it is all about as far as I can see.

It is true you can freely download a copy of this book from Linux Docs but I'd sooner have something solid in front of me while I work.

  2. comments from a Linux newbie

This guide has been a perfect starting point for me. Not too fast, not too slow, just right. The exercises really helped me to get my mind around things.

At the moment I am waiting for my distribution to arrive in the mail and only got a chance to look into this Linux stuff at work. I chose Debian for home use, based on its system for updates. After I get it installed I will go through the book again, to repeat the exercises on this system and pick up some extra points that I missed in the first pass.

I presently run Windows XP at home but have become increasingly frustrated with it and hope to be able to run Linux exclusively in due course, but in the short run, it will be dual boot. I was very happy to find that Windows users are not shoo-ed away, the book is very accessible to any computer user. Nobody is disciminated.

My overall impression of Linux so far is very positive, based only on the number of available guides and HOWTO's. If this guide is an indication of the other information out there, I am going to be very happy running Linux.
