1. A Great Book!

   I consider this one of the best book on the subject matter. It is written with a very practical approach and the examples are very well explained. There are also a lot of exercises at the end of each chapter which provide the possibility to practice. Reading is facilitated by the different colors/fonts used to highlight specific aspects.

2. Java - How to Program; Early Objects Edition (8th Ed.)

   This book (although it is quite small and incredibly chunky) is very useful. It covers all aspects of Java - from basic If statements, to complex web design and graphical functions.
   
   Complements my first year Engineering studies perfectly, and I would recommend it to anyone considering any textbook for Java.
   
   I had no previous experience of any programming and this book has pulled me through the first year (so far) quite comfortably. Highly recommended!

3. Superb

   I've done some programming in other languages (C#, Actionscript etc) but recently wanted to get into Java. This book is superb. Packed full of excellent explanations, and a terrific range of exercises. (BUT be aware that this is a paperback, not Hardcover as listed here.) Not the cheapest book, for sure, but worth every penny, I'd say.
