A good reference book

David Flanagan did a good job keeping it simple. This book is very good for begginers, it lays down the major concepts needed to Java programming.
It is not very thorough and it will not make you an expert, but is definitely a good book to have beside you when developing an application in Java, which is the purpose of the book. -

A great bible for reference purposes but it dates very quickly and online references are far better
