Not for the beginner
Rated out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2002
This book quite frankly is a superb reference source but lousy as a learning guide. I bought this book in order to learn javascript and found it bordering on useless. However once I had got a grasp of javascript (thanks to the sams Teach yourself..in 24 hours) I was able to utilise this book as a valuable reference.
In short, for reference - great, to learn javascript from - pick something else.

This is a resource for webmasters

I you like writing websites, you'll find this book a really valuable resource for creating interactive websites. You can just find a lot of examples and code to write and experiment. -
More of a reference book
Rated out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2002
This book is good as a reference only. If you are beginning to learn JavaScript, you need a book with loads of exercises to reinforce what you are reading. This book lacks heavily in that area. -
Excellent for reference or for learning

This book leaves no stone unturned in it's disection of scripting for different platforms. Everything you need to know, about which browser supports what, is either in the book or on the CD. I wouldn't say it is a book for the absolute novice, but with a little bit of a grounding in the language, and providing you fully read and understand the tutorial chapters before you move on, you can get everything you need from it. -
An Excellent book for any enthusiastic web-designer.

I found this book an excellent resource to help me learn JavaScript. I already could do HTMl very well and would recommend the book to anybody designing an interactive website. -
Good but becoming out of date
Rated out of 5 stars, July 12th, 2009
This is a great reference book, however, a seventh edition is now needed with all browsers now in later versions, the compatibility chart isn't up to date, and so, pointless, unless of course you're looking up incompatible methods for older browsers. -
Excellent

Danny Glover's Javascript bible goes from strength to strength. I have an older version and use it a lot. I bought this newer version to keep current.
If you write javascript programs you need a book like this. I have several other javascript books and I don't tend to bother with them because I have this one.
It's never far away when I'm doing javascript stuff.
Effectively I liked it so much I bought it twice. -
poor support on CD
Rated out of 5 stars, November 12nd, 2000
The CD is supposed to come with an indexed version of the book. This is a reason for purchasing in my opinion BUT the pdf files which are on the cd are not indexed and it is a real pain to use. One star. -
Way over my head and not enough about real life...
Rated out of 5 stars, August 12th, 2000
Like several other reviewers before me, I was completely lost by chapter 4 (Methods). I continued to struggle on to chapter 8 which begins with the Netscape 4 Document Object Model and at that point I gave up. This book will *not* teach you JavaScript if you do not already know quite a lot about it. Another problem with it is that all the examples are very artificial - there is nothing in the first 8 chapters which you can actually use in real life or in day-to-day web design... -
A superb learning resource

I found this book invaluble as a resource for learning javascript.I used it in conjunction with nick heinle's designing with javascript. Together they're a great combination. jfp

i found this book very helpful indeed,
Rated out of 5 stars, April 12th, 2000
of course it's dated, so are all computer books after about a year. I still got alot out of it. The book does lean toward netscape but I think that is a good angle to take since everthing else tends to lean toward explorer. This book certainly wakes you up to the fact that your web site is unlikely to work universally without some work. -
This book so so out of date it's stale.
Rated out of 5 stars, March 12st, 2000
Still talking about ie4 this book wasn't even worth the cd which packages everything up in pdf type files. As for the "extra" chapters all this is on the web nothing new and not as I bought it for, a good learning tool.
