Reviews for Jumpstart Technology: Effective Use in the Solaris Operating Environment (The official Sun Microsystems resource series)

  1. A good practical guide to jumpstart configuration.

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2002

I would recommend this book to someone who wants to use jumpstart for more then just installing the basic operating system but who has struggled to find readable information on advanced jumpstart set-up and use. I was familiar with doing hands-on solaris installations and knew the principles of jumpstart but couldn't work out from the manuals how you could make jumpstart do things like install packages, patches and run site specific installation scripts. The book was good because it explained a simple jumpstart install to make sure you understood the fundamentals then gave detailed explanations of how you could customise the basic jumpstart installation to make it do much more. The sample scripts that were included on the book's cd were handy because they were an example you could modify when setting up your first advanced jumpstart installation server. Even with the supplied scripts you still need to be prepared to spend several hours studying how everything works, but the example scripts save you hours trying to work things out for yourself. Overall I rate this book highly for explaining a complicated process well.
