Learn HTML In a Weekend is one of three crash-course books by Steven E Callihan, the others being Create Your First Web Page In a Weekend and Create Your First Mac Web Page In a Weekend. In this one, the emphasis is firmly on learning the nuts and bolts of HTML.

The book is set out as seven lessons that keen readers can complete over a weekend, although the author does keep saying that you can work through them at your own pace. On Friday night you do some background reading, and beginners may be sufficiently daunted to abandon the course--there's a lot more detail than you really need. Saturday morning and afternoon are dedicated to learning HTML tags and attributes. On Saturday evening you tackle tables, and Sunday is given over to frames, forms and graphics. At first everything is coded by hand, but on the second day you use shareware programs from the included CD-ROM.

Learn HTML In a Weekend would be ideal for students who've bunked off an entire term's lectures and now need to cram for their exams. People with a more casual interest in HTML should be aware that Callihan's focus is quite narrow. He covers tags that few, if any, Web browsers support, but there's next to nothing on design. Still, if you keep your head down, you will learn HTML in a weekend. --Mary Lojkine

Reviews for Learn HTML in a Weekend

  1. More Please

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, December 12st, 2000

Having undertaken each of the tutorials in order, and watched each example appear in my browser before my eyes, I am so impressed that I can say my 'im' has never been so pressed!!!! Awesome (to quote a US venacular!!) Very easy to follow and retain in the memory banks. My only comment now is - more please. I'm back at Amazon looking for the next level book on HTML as I am an expert thanks to Steven Callihan. I urge everyone to buy this book rather than waste money on a course!
  2. Why bother going on a course?

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, September 12th, 2000

I am now the king of HTML! After just 3 (not 2 days), I managed to create an interactive frame-based professional-looking website which has already generated custom for my business..... what more do you need to know?
  3. An excellent book. Must buy.

I rate this book 5 stars because it's the highest rate possible here. This book is simply unbelievable. It helps me become a competent HTML writer in just a short week-end from being a complete novice. Buy it, you will get more than you bargin for.
  4. what can i say? BRILLIANT!

You simply MUST buy this book, it really does teach you HTML. I picked it up on a thursday, and had my first webpage on the internet by the satuday, complete with scrolling bars, forms, graphics, animations, sound.......the list goes on! It is one of the best buys that i have ever made. Superlatives overcome me for this book, if you want to make a webpage, and don;t know where to begin, YOU DO NOW :)
  5. This is THE book to learn how to design your own web site

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, May 12th, 1999

I do not need many words to review this book. If you are thinking of designing a web site, or just want to know how those neat web sites are put together, than this is the book for you! It is written in such a way that average computer users can actually at the end of a week-end design a good looking web site. It explains everything in detail and has a great CD as an added bonus. Reading this book to me was like eating peanuts, I could not stop.
