Brilliant
Rated out of 5 stars, September 12rd, 2009
In my opinion this book is great. Its easy and enjoyable to read, its very useful and will teach you how to use the language really well. It isn't huge and overloaded, it gives you what you need to know, in a clear and informative way that is very well explained, with good examples and exactly the right amount of detail. If you need more you can follow it up with Intermediate Perl which covers stuff that is useful in large and complex projects. For every day perl, this is everything you need in an easy to digest form. It is targeted at people with a bit of programming background, though in the introduction they say that it should be possible for someone to learn from scratch. I came at this with no previous experience at the time and found that, if I worked through the examples and exercises, it was easy enough to understand. -

I went all the way through this book and actually managed to commit to memory how to approach some problems with Perl, no internet, no book needed. To me, that says, pretty damn good book, although the teaching that went along with it was also good. This gave me a strong basis for programming as a whole, which I approached more fully later in the course. -
Great book

I like it and it has increased my enthusiasm to learn perl even though programming has been traditionally not my strongest point -
The Perfect Introduction to Perl
Rated out of 5 stars, February 12th, 2009
I was looking for a quick, exhaustive book about Perl basic features to develop my university project: this book is exactly what I needed, filled by exhamples and useful hints about perl programming.
If you're a novice with perl and you're wondering about the better book to buy, then you'll find it. Then, if you want to master this language, you may consider the camel book, but - first of all - start with this one. -
It's good - but oh the 'jokes'
Rated out of 5 stars, February 12th, 2009
Good book, well organised with examples and lessons.
Can't compare with others because I haven't read them.
But why did they have to put in the 'funnies'? They aren't funny and they really do irritate after a while, minus one star for this annoying aspect.
