Reviews for Linux Phrasebook

  1. Great Book!

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, October 12th, 2009

This is an indispensable pocket size book for those new to the linux command line.
Lots of useful tips to speed up everyday activities and make life simpler.
I combined this with Ubuntu Linux Toolbox: 1000+ Commands for Ubuntu and Debian Power Users and I'm writing automatic scripts after a few hours reading.
  2. All the basics

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2009

I used this little reference/tutorial to prepare for the Red Hat Certified Technician course. Fills in all the the gaps in your foundation-level LINUX knowledge nicely. I have feeling this will also be my first "reach-for" book for jogging my memory on file handling commands in the future. Highly recommended.
  3. Outstanding handy volume

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2009

This is an excellent handy paperback. I have bought some far more expensive books when i started using linux but this one goes through things e.g. file permissions explaining clearly and concisely the two methods in a way that one can easily follow.

I wouldn't be without this handy little volume and wish i'd got it much earlier. Definitely excellent value.
  4. An Absolute Treasure.

Note - it's nearly a year since I posted the following review, but I've come back to say that I wish I could give this little book *another* 5 stars. I still use it regularly, and turn to it more often than any other Linux book in my collection.
    =================================================================

I made the switch to Linux about a year ago. I'd tried (many times) in the past, but Linux on a desktop just wasn't ready for a non-techie user like me. Then Ubuntu Linux came along and changed all that.

While you can use Linux just as a straight Windows replacement and just 'do stuff', there's something about it that draws you in, and makes you want to know more about your computer... So I quickly found that I'd acquired a growing library of Linux books. For example, on the shelf beside this computer, I have 'The Ubuntu Linux Bible', 'Hacking Ubuntu', 'Running Linux', 'Ubuntu Hacks', and The Linux Phrasebook.

They all have their uses, but for anyone who wants to start exploring the Linux command line, none of them can touch this little gem. I still use it all the time, both as a reference to look stuff up, and occasionally just to work through a chapter and remind myself of some useful commands.

Many of my other Linux books were expensive - this one wasn't. If you just want to scratch the surface of what the command line can do and learn a few vital commands, this book is for you.

If you want to become a Linux guru and power user, doing all sorts of geeky hacker-looking stuff, then this book is for you too.

I really can't recommend it highly enough. Just buy it now! Click that button! You know you want to!!
  5. An excellent resource for users learning the Linux command line

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, January 12th, 2008

This is the reference book Linux users have been waiting for. If you have ever struggled with MAN pages then this is for you. Crammed full of examples of commands and how to use them. This book is an absolute bargin for the price and small enough to put in your pocket. One of the few Linux books I use every day, and its well written too. Well worth 5 stars.
