This is a nice book, about a fragmented and complex subject. It's basically a collection of papers or essays, each about a specific subject in application development for mobile phones. The biggest challenge in mobile phone development today is that there are too many operating systems, too many handsets; just too much of everything. It's like the world of microcomputers before the world aligned on Wintel and Apple Mac. This book reflects this with very specific chapters addressing Windows Mobile; Symbian; Linux; J2ME; Qtopia, all with illustrative code. Symbian gets good coverage with chapters on C++, Open C and Python. The subjects also include video, power consumption and programming Bluetooth, which are all relevant and interesting.
The book is just pre-Android and pre-iPhone, which will immediately dismis it from some people's shopping list, but I think it's still a worthwhile overview.
