1 : 1 copy of the online documentation
Rated out of 5 stars, March 12st, 2003
This book is a one to one copy of the online documentation, but then even outdated! Why would I buy this book if i can download the documentation in an up-to-date format onto my PC.Like the title says, it is a reference. So no book that you read from page 1 until the end. On the contrary: if you have a problem you look that up. Although the book does have an index, searching for a particular topic is much faster in an e-document than in a printed book.
If i would have known that beforehand, I would not have bought this book. It maybe look nice on you bookshelf but is withou any practical use.

It's all you'll need for a long while...

This is a great book. It's written by the actual guys who develop the MySQL RDMS and their unmatched level of knowledge is apparent from page one. A lot of the material covered is freely available from the MySQL web site, but if you are like me and would rather sit down and read a book than have to read through reams of info on a screen then this is a wise buy. That said, there is still a lot of stuff in here that doesn't appear to be on their web site.I already knew the basic stuff about MySQL before I bought this book but this has provided me with enough knowledge to keep me going a good while longer. The optimisation tips alone are worth the price.
