Reviews for Oracle Database 11g SQL: Master SQL and PL/SQL in the Oracle Database (Osborne Oracle Press Series)

  1. Full of mistakes with bad examples on the more advanced features

    Rated 1 out of 5 stars, July 12th, 2009

This book tries to cover all users, starting from people that have no experience in SQL and programming up to DBA's and developers.

As you can imagine it does a bad job for all was of them.

Some of the example code has errors and was propably never tried out.
I thought of sending these back to the editor but it was a rather big task.

Some of the most common features of Oracle (pro 8i) are explained in a nice way, but newer and more advanced features like analytic functions and XML stuff (which was the reason that I bought the book for) was probably written in an attempt to avoid confusing non-developers.

In the end the examples often do not make sense and its confusing developers too (I am sure that "business users" will have stopped reading long ago).

I am afraid that reading out the examples from the Oracle SQL reference
is better for developers while non-technical people would need something more introductory.
