Reviews for Oracle Warehouse Builder 11g: Getting Started

  1. Superficial, little content

    Rated 2 out of 5 stars, January 12th, 2010

The first third of this book is basically a walkthrough on installing this (very specific) version of warehouse builder. OK if this is what you want but even the walkthrough is very prescriptive and does not take much time to explain the implications of what you are doing.

The rest of the book is just a pass over the functionality available in WHB. Very little time is spent on the mapping editor and mapping objects - unfortunate since this is where people start to ask for help. In particular there is next to no discussion of the oddities of individual mapping entities, how to manipulate objects in other schemas and so on.

Generally the book fails to tackle realistic scenarios. Some of the chosen examples were rather inappropriate. This together with the lack of discussion of real world pitfalls make me question how much practical experience the authors actually have with this product.

In summary this book works (after a fashion) as a basic introduction but in itself will not turn you into a Warehouse builder developer. You could put much the same thing together yourself from the Oracle documentation and some screenshots.
