Reviews for PHP and MySQL Everyday Applications for Dummies

  1. Informative but not for Dummies!

    Rated 3 out of 5 stars, March 12nd, 2007

I bought this book after reading the author's other book 'PHP & MySql for Dummies' because I wanted to create a shopping cart. I have already learned and applied the basics of php and sql.
And I did struggle with this book. Yes it is very informative but definetely not for Dummies!
I had to refer to the other book for explantions to what I was reading, as you are expected to know php. She writes (for example) 'create a function' or 'connect to the database in the usual way' with no explanation of how to do that.
Also she uses a lot of include files which are displayed in the book but it took me a while to figure out where the file was in the book that the script was linking to and scratch my head trying to work out how the program 'fits together'.

So to sum up, yes it is very informative and can get results (I have now built a fully functioning shopping cart!) but I'd advise buying her other excellent book 'PHP & MySql for Dummies' either first or as well as, unless you're experienced, you'll need it.
