Good summary on databases - hated the god stuff
Rated out of 5 stars, August 12th, 2007
I want to understand postgres and databases and perhaps do a system set up on windows This is a great book for that. It has an excellent introduction in a fairly non-technical way to what can be a very dry subject(i know - i have a few other unread books on databases). Once past introduction and installation it falls back to the fairly standard format of list of commands and what they do. The first 2 chapters gets 5 stars and i'd give the rest of the book 4 stars since it matches other similar books as a good reference and it does focus on windows, a product area most open source experts seem to treat with disdain.
So why only 3 stars ?
God !
I do not understand why publishers of supposedly fact based books allow multiple dedications to imaginary supernatural beings. Firstly it probably makes the book un-sellable in territories where they believe in equally false but alternative imaginary beings and secondly I really did not want to buy this book because of the sanctimonious dedications.
Only the excellent first chapter got me past that but i still have some regrets about supporting such outdated beliefs in any way.
