Reviews for Pro MySQL (Expert's Voice in Open Source)

  1. The essential companion to Mysql.

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, May 12th, 2008

I have to admit that up to this point I've only read a small proportion of the book (albeit in different sections). However I've got nearly 20 years experience of using relational databases and during that time I've needed to access a lot of reference books. This book is as good as any I've come across, and is a goldmine for the serious developer and/or administrator. It's particularly useful for those upgrading to version 5 Mysql and who need to use the new features. So, I've given this book a 5 rating. You may not need all the contents (although it's been written in a way that you will find all sections interesting) and yes, given enough time and another version of mysql parts of the book may become out-of-date. But, for anyone who needs the ultimate reference book for Mysql in 2008, this manual has to be the essential choice.
  2. Something Different, but essential

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, July 12th, 2006

With the release of MySQL 5.0 the database MySQL raised the bar to a new level. The introduction of Stored Procedures, triggers and views allowed more development potential and made the database community take another look at MySQL.

Pro MySQL covers these subjects for the first time but also covers a number of other subjects in great detail than many other MySQL books on the market. It's well written and witty and is a great book to dip in and out of.

This is definately a book to have in your library if you are either a MySQL DBA or a developer using MySQL.
