Reviews for Professional Perl Development

  1. Not sure this quite works

    Rated 3 out of 5 stars, June 12th, 2001

This is a strange little book (well, not so little) - it's less about Perl than clever things you can do with Perl. Don't get this if you want to learn Perl, or if you want an advanced insight into the workings of the language. In fact the preface acknowledges it as a follow up to Wrox's Professional Perl Programming. However, it does function as documentation for some of the significant Perl libraries (which don't tend to be covered in much detail on paper), and you could treat it as a programmer's cookbook to some degree.

Each chapter includes a fair amount of background to whatever area is going to be tackled in Perl: this introductory material can be a bit tedious, especially if you already know something about the area but want to find out how to access it from Perl.

Overall, covers a lot of ground. There are more detailed books around for specific areas, but I can't think of any others with as wide a scope.
