Linux is a heavily documented OS but the documentation is scattered and generic. At over 1200 pages, Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed is a heavyweight tome that seeks to cover many aspects of RH 6-- installation, DNS, Apache, Perl, Python, X programming, networking, sendmail, security, system administration, printing (which really needs a whole book),automation and far more besides. Naturally, the quantity of practical examples that can be included is limited. But what Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed does brilliantly is shine a light on the inner workings and structures of RH 6 in a clear and logical manner. The kind of information that's here can't be found in the How Tos, help systems, manuals, site FAQs or anywhere else except inside the head of a RH 6 expert. On every page, there's something useful--find out more about the "nice" command, or check out the section on initialisation files.Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed is clearly geared towards server administrators rather than desktop users and novices. Networking issues are covered in depth and 300 pages are given over to programming issues, but there's not a word on fonts--despite the fact that Red Hat 6 is the first distribution to include TrueType font support in its X implementation. Nevertheless this is a comprehensive reference guide. If your Linux box is connected to anything, buy it. --Steve Patient
