JavaScript has become the language no Web developer can do without, mainly because it runs in both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Sams Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours explains how to include JavaScript code in Web pages, in order to achieve effects such as rollover buttons, navigation menus, pop-up windows, animated graphics and simple forms. The material is presented in 24 short chapters, each of which concludes with a summary, a quiz and several exercises.

In its fundamentals JavaScript is similar to other programming languages, so early chapters teach essential concepts such as variables, functions, arrays, operators and loops. There is also good coverage of how to control a Web page by programming its DOM (Document Object Model) and responding to events such as button clicks and mouse movements. The author explains that there are incompatibilities between different browsers, and shows how to write code that works in all recent browsers, if necessary by detecting which one is in use. There is also a guide to troubleshooting and handling errors. The most advanced chapters require either Internet Explorer or Netscape 6.0, because of limitations in the DOM presented by Netscape Navigator 4.0. Towards the end, you learn how to create a complete poker game that runs in a browser.

This hands-on guide is ideal for those Web page authors who want to dip a toe into the world of Web scripting. --Tim Anderson

Reviews for Sams Teach Yourself Javascript in 24 Hours

  1. You will be a JavaScript Expert in 24 Hours Time

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, August 12th, 2006

I bought an earlier edition of this book and it literally changed my life. It kicked off the series of events that landed me in a full-time IT Development job, writing secure web sites for Financial Advisors to buy and sell funds and equities real-time.

This is the definitive book for learning JavaScript and this latest edition includes a chapter on AJAX - you might not know what that is yet, but you will... if you buy this book.

It's easy to follow, provides usable examples and the website that supports the book includes a support forum if you get stuck at any point.
  2. Good for beginners to wrok through from start to finish

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2005

As a beginning programmer, Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours was an excellent place to start. Moncur knows his audience and never goes too fast or too slow, which is the main trap that authors fall into when writing for beginners.

Pitched at beginner programmers, Moncur does not patronise and credits the reader with a level of competence of the workings of the program examples given in the book, yet still talks through the program in enough detail so you are never in the dark as to what is happening. Terms are explained well and the exercises and quizzes at the end of the chapter are always relevant to what has been studied.

Good examples are included and support is supplied from the author's website. This book also touches on DHTML but introduces it well making this not only a good place to start JavaScript programming but a good springboard for complete beginners at web programming with a knowledge of HTML to start designing much more dynamic websites. Highly recommended.
  3. This book shines a light in the darkness

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, March 12th, 2004

If you find javascript confusing this is the book for you. It doesn't tap the full potential of javascript but that is not its purpose. This book is specifically designed to take a beginner and teach them the basics. This, in my opinion, it achieves very well.

Buy a more comprehensive work (such as the javascript bible) after you have worked your way through this book and you'll have all you need to get going with javascript.

If ever your forget something basic, you'll find the answer in this book.

To sum up, this book alone helped me to pass a javascript certification exam.

  4. A concise guide

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, October 12th, 2003

This book provides the reader with a concise guide to develop a basic understanding of the structures and uses of Javascript. I have some previous experience in coding and with this book I was creating useful script for my page in a few hours
  5. Does what it says

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, July 12st, 2002

This book does what it says - it teaches you the javascript language from scratch in 24 hours - although it would be a pretty tiring day if you did it just in one 24 hour period. The SAMS TYS series are generally excellent, with outstanding production values and good, clear explanations that aren't patronizing. I found this book the most heavy going of the series so far. In some places I would have liked more detailed explanations, or more worked examples.
