Reviews for Solaris Essential Reference

  1. Empty and uninformative

    Rated 1 out of 5 stars, July 12th, 2001

Personally I would not buy this book again, it gave me nothing new and does little to help with command useage. I would strongly recomend that you buy UNIX in a Nutshell and don't waste your money on this.
  2. Give me an author who knows what he's talking about!

    Rated 1 out of 5 stars, April 12st, 2001

I'm a very experienced Solaris administrator and frustrated that this book showed no new insight, taught me nothing new, and was full of errors - usually typographically - changing the entire meaning of command options. A very disappointing purchase. What this book needs most (first of all) is some proper proof-reading.
  3. Not for me.

    Rated 2 out of 5 stars, September 12st, 2000

I am a Solaris System Administrator, and have often turned the pages of this book to find that all important command and it's not there. The information is really only condensed man pages, and contains no hints on how best to use the command. If that is what you want, tthen buy another book.
  4. Excellent solaris reference guide

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, May 12th, 2000

Almost everything you would need is covered in this book. No Solaris SA should be without this book. It might seem like a rehash of the man pages, but its so much more than that.
  5. Use the man pages instead!

    Rated 2 out of 5 stars, April 12th, 2000

I read the other reviews and bought this book expecting great things, but unfortunately the majority of it seems to be little more than a summary of the unix man pages. It also only seems to cover the most common commands, missing out many of the more powerful commands available in Unix.

On the bright side, it does have a few sections at the end covering topics such as the Basic Security Model which I found useful.

In summary, the book sits on my desk and I rarely use it. Its best purpose is for a quick flick to look for new commands, then if you find one, use the man pages for more information.
