Reviews for Sun Certified Administrator for Solaris 9.0 Study Guide (Exams 310-XXX and 310-XXX) (Certification Press)

  1. rip off

    Rated 1 out of 5 stars, January 12st, 2006

This book is an absolute rip off - Don't waste your money on it!

Apart from not covering the basic Solaris Syllabus (which is on the sun site), this book is 99.9% IDENTICAL to the Solaris 8 book. There are even errors in this book referring to Solaris 8 instead of 9.
This explains why key topics such as Printing and NFS logging are omitted completely.

  2. avoid this book

    Rated 1 out of 5 stars, September 12rd, 2003

apart from the major gaps in coverage of the certification exams (printers, config files, ufs snapshots and the like) this book is also filled with many editorial and content errors. commands are wrongly Capitalised, the wrong commands are given, no explanation is provided to the various command line options, test questions have simply incorrect answers and there are sections which demonstrates that the authors have a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of running a solaris system.

all in all you'd be better just visiting the suns documentation website and reconciling that against the exam objectives. this book will in no way help you prepare for either of the exams required for the certification. '100% coverage' indeed!

  3. Review of coverage & content

    Rated 2 out of 5 stars, May 12rd, 2003

If you are using this book to study for the Solaris 9 certification - part 1 then make sure that you also use something else also as this book will leave large gaps in your knowledge.

Examples of things being left out, or just missed out that are in the exam are as follows:

    1. Printers ( I had 11 questions on printing in the exam and very scant information in the book.
    2) /etc/shadow file - nothing in the book except for basic overview.
    3) Group passwords - nothing in the book
    4) Live upgrade - nothing in the book.
    5) rusers - nothing ....

I also have a copy of the Solaris 8 study guide and the books are almost exactly the same. This you may expect for reference material but not when the exams are so different.
    Buy something else instead.
