Indepth and knowledgeable
Rated out of 5 stars, August 12th, 1999
Hi,John Kirkwood is a very experienced Sybase professional. I had the luck to be taught by him in early 1991 and found that one thing was clear about Sybase, regarless of which version you are using - it is full of traps which can make administering it a nightmare for anyone with little experience.
Kirkwood makes this all too clear in this book and I for one was thankfull that somone had taken the time to document all the pitfalls in administering SQL Server. There are too many books out there that are simply a cut and paste effort from the official sybase documentation set.
Thankfully, this isn't one of those books. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to gain an understanding of the complexity in using SQL Server to it's optimum level.

Lots of tuning hints rather than a comprehensive reference
Rated out of 5 stars, October 12th, 1998
Too technical for most people: This guy expects you to have read everything else. If you look for reference sections on built in commands, transact SQL syntax etc., you will be disappointed. If you look for one hundred little tuning hints, includeing 'Sybase should have implemented it in this way', then this is it. The author has too much knowledge to be of use to the average developer/maintainer/administrator.
