Value for money.
Rated out of 5 stars, January 12rd, 2010
It does exactly what it says on the tin. 10 out of10. Easy to read and packed with important, day to day information. I have used ideas from this book at home and work. -
all very strange

I thought this was an incredibly useful book, and I am stunned by the two other "reviews" on here. I checked the reviews and ratings on Amazon.com and they are unanimous in praising this five-star guide to Ubuntu.
It seems that there is something rather suspicious in the previous entries.
Buy this book, you won't regret it. -
Very very very poor

I wouldn't buy this book, the problem is I did.
I have tried about half a dozen things using Ubuntu Unleashed and NOT ONE has worked for me. There seems to be a hangover from previous publications, in fact a really cynical person might say that they just did a find and replace on the word Ubuntu from, say, debian or something - most of the commands in the book don't seem to be recognised by my Ubuntu anyway...or it might be the case that it is trying to be a guide for everyone and ends up guiding noone. The Windows of reference books.
There is a section on introduction to Linux which I found highly confusing and quickly found a better, bookmarkable, searchable explanation online for free using Google. After this happened a dozen times, I started to get angry with the book and the fact I'd spent 50euro on it and still have nothing better than Google to guide me.
Publishers philosophy:
"Make a really big thick book and people will think its the ultimate guide to the thing, and you can charge a premium for that"
Don't be fooled like I was. -
Very Disappointing

I am an IT professional with over 20 years experience and this book is incredibly misleading and confusing.
The version of Ubuntu supplied is different from the one documented, so it makes it difficult to follow when packages are misnamed and locations are different from the instructions.
Having spent many weeks with this publication I can say that if you if you keep at it you do make progress. Every page has margin notes now with the corrections I have worked out.
Maybe this has been updated, mine has Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with it.
