Reviews for Unix Hints and Hacks

  1. Buy it now!

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, July 12th, 2001

You would be hard-pushed to find anything like the coverage of Hacks & Hints outside the £40+ price bracket. Ok don't expect to become a Sys Admin guru overnight but do expect a wealth of valuable hints and tints to push you in the right direction.

Waingrow's style makes easy reading and its good to see so many script and screen examples that really do work when you try them at "home". This guy has clearly done the job.

  2. Good - but it's not the mountain of information I thought

    Rated 3 out of 5 stars, November 12rd, 1999

The first half is as advertised - a good set of useful sysadmin hints. The second half is completely different: homespun wisdom about how to get on as a sysadmin in the workplace. Hmmm. OK I suppose but I was expecting more of the hints and hacks rather than the fireside chat.
  3. Fantastic

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, August 12st, 1999

This is a great book for those looking for quick solutions to common real work scenarios. If you are responsible for Unix (yes including Linux) systems this is one book you have to have. For coding solutions the book usually shows both shell script and perl examples for the same problem.
  4. GREAT BOOK!!

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, August 12th, 1999

Finally a book that deals with the real things that most UNIX system administrators face. It saves you the trouble of finding out things only after you face it. You could save yourself a lot of time solving problems that could have been avoided by reading this book. With the price nothing beats it. Not even those $30+ books.

I always bring it with me, reading it while commuting to/from work. I gained a lot of insight when I read the book. Some I already know but most are new to me. I've learned a lot here than any of the other books that I read.

This is a must book for any serious UNIX System Administrator.

  5. Bunches of cool tips and ideas

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, July 12th, 1999

This is not a beginners book, you should have some background and practical Unix experience before picking it up.

There are a multitude of handy dandy little tips that can be easily adapted to your routine system administration chores. Many of the tips are directed towards system administrators responsible for large installations of dozens or hundreds of machines and should be great time/energy/aggravation savers.

This book clearly shows the power of Unix, the author has taken simply tools and combined them in ingenious ways to perform useful work. I've found many relevent hacks that I can't wait to try out.
