Reviews for Windows Home Server User's Guide (Expert's Voice)

  1. Useful but with reservations.

    Rated 3 out of 5 stars, December 12th, 2008

Let me endorse previous reviews by saying that this is a very useful handbook to go with Home Server. However, I feel it right to point out a few issues.
Firstly, I was expecting a bigger book for the price; the text is fairly large and well spaced and it's not as detailed as I thought.
Secondly, it seems to be aimed at the user who's confident with IT in the home but not necessarily an expert. More advanced users will find quite a bit of it simplistic and wasted on them. For example, there's a paragraph explaining what a CAT5 cable is. And another to explain what an NIC is.
Thirdly, although it's not an official Microsoft publication, it's obviously been written in close collabarotion with them. If you've ever read Microsoft's own study guides you'll recognise the style, i.e everything Microsoft good, everything else inferior. So don't expect comparisons with other software that could do a similar job, or even acknowledgement that such products exist.
Having said all that, if you want a straightforward manual and user guide that isn't too in depth, it's a good one, if, in my opinion, a little expensive.
  2. There are Currently 6 Windows Home Server Books - So is this one any Good?

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, May 12th, 2008

Well as I have said there are currently 6 Windows Home Server (WHS) books on the market and i'v read them all (yikes). So is the User's Guide from author Andrew Edney any good?
Yes, Yes and Yes. What Andrew has managed to do is write a complete guide of getting the most out of your Windows Home Server. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro there is something for you within the books 300+ pages.
Starting with what WHS is (just in case you didn't know), Andrew then takes us in detail, through the features of the product including how to install and most importantly the steps you should follow once installation has finished.
Andrew also includes a network primer and details on how to build your own Windows home Server as well.
Thoroughly recommended and defiantly one of the best WHS books currently on the market.
  3. Great book

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, February 12th, 2008

This book is well researched and the author really knows his stuff. It has lots of illustrations and takes you step by step through setting up Windows Home Server. It can be used to find some of the more hidden features as well as a good reference guide.
    Well written and enjoyable!
  4. Great book to get started with Windows Home Server

    Rated 5 out of 5 stars, January 12th, 2008

This is a well illustrated book which will let the reader get started with Windows Home Server. It guides them through installing, configuring and how to use the Windows Home Server within your home network.

The book covers how to setup users accounts, backup and restore you home PCs using the home server, share files, stream media, access your files remotely and monitor the health of your home computers. It also includes some useful explanations on home networking terms and tips if you wish to build your own home server. Recommended.
  5. Excellent Book

    Rated 4 out of 5 stars, January 12st, 2008

This book covers everything you need to know to build and use a Windows Home Server. It got me through a number of problems with remote access that may have taken me days to sort! Buy this book if you buy a home server, you wont be disappointed.
